Modern craftsman style house – An Arts and Crafts home, Craftsman-style house, was the American answer to the abundance and heavy decoration of the Victorian period. Known for its simplicity, the original Craftsman home was built mainly between 1900 and 1916. However, parts of the Craftsman live on, and you can still build a new modern craftsman style house.

Grouped Windows

After the sometimes dark colors of the Victorian era, the Arts and Crafts style architecture lightened things up a little. Modern craftsman style house often asymmetric or grouped windows. Large windows groupings in the living or dining rooms often have built-in window seats for them.

Almost all modern craftsman style house has a centralized stove or fireplace in the living room. These fireplaces are usually of exposed stone with wood mantles and are often large and reminiscent of fireplaces from ages past. The central fireplace provides a visual focal point of the living room.

Interior Elements of the modern craftsman style house tend to be homemade. Needlepoint pillows, quilts and other homemade items, such as Afghans, add a warm touch. These elements lead to other rooms like the kitchen, where even the towels often handmade from natural linen and hand-sewn.

One of the key components of the Craftsman house and the Arts and Crafts movement is simplicity. Extras ornaments in the Craftsman-style home are often minimal. Instead, the structural elements are the details. Carpentry, where the two beams meet, often serves two purposes, both functionally and aesthetically. Carved stair railings or handrails are common, and small carvings in wood trim are not uncommon.
